Ethical & Efficient Government

Our state government is incredibly inefficient and run by political power and convenience, not with transparency and public input. Over the last four years, the majority of legislative sessions lasted 30 minutes, yet we stayed in session month after month, long after the July 1st budget deadline.

Legislative rules are “waived” or “amended” by the majority for political advantage. The majority leadership determines all committee assignments by members. There is little notice or transparency of committee work or calendars. Limited space in committee rooms often prevent public entry, and when people can enter, there is little or no opportunity for their voices to be heard through public comment.

We must have more transparency in a legislator’s financial dealing and relationships when he or she advocates for budget earmarks.

Let’s set a schedule. Legislative work must begin and end by the fiscal year, July 1st. Budget work must be done in committee, not behind closed doors or by conference reports. Open and transparent government is democracy. We must vow to return to that.

As your State Representative, I will continue to fight against authoritarian policies that divide us. Government should work for all people and enact policies that strengthen communities. We must move forward facing new challenges and do everything we can to protect our democracy. Together, we can do this!
